About the Process
Building on master plans recently completed for every park in the district, Great Parks is also developing a master plan for the Werk Road property. The goal of the plan is to align community interests with the facilities and programmatic goals of Great Parks to design a new park that is a true community asset.
The Great Parks team conducted extensive analysis of the site and surrounding community. This analysis looked at conditions of the site, such as hydrology, vegetation, existing building conditions and access points. It also included an audit of other nearby parks and recreational amenities. Data was supplemented with knowledge and insight provided by the project’s Advisory Group as well as interviews with individual community members.
A draft master plan for the property was developed based on ongoing community input and the regulatory structure of the Clean Ohio Funding by which this project is made possible.
Public Engagement Summary
Members of the Westwood community and Hamilton County residents were engaged with the design of the master plan for the Werk Road Great Park through online surveys, site visits, interviews and meetings, and several youth-focused events.
Key takeaways from the public survey:
People want a safe park with walking trails in its natural beauty
Respondents expressed a desire to conserve the park’s natural space, as well as to use the park for learning about nature through nature programming and self-guided material, especially for educators
Educators expressed that the cost and times of the educational programming are accessible to their students/youth is very important
Safety and Parking are top concerns for the respondents
Drug use, parking, and crowds are top concerns for the respondents
Conservation of the park, its landmarks, and history were also important
