We Want to Hear From You!

The West Akron Neighborhood Plan will consider the past, present, and future of the neighborhood. Your voice is needed in this process to help create a shared vision for West Akron that is representative of the neighborhood.

About This Plan

The West Akron Neighborhood Plan will encompass the West Akron and Sherbondy Hill areas. This plan will engage neighborhood leaders and the City of Akron to ensure a common vision that aligns with the neighborhood’s wants and needs. Through the support of the City of Akron’s Department of Planning and Urban Development, this plan will consider opportunities for the neighborhoods as a whole, but will focus primary urban design and planning recommendations on the Great Streets of West Akron and Sherbondy Hill and the area surrounding the Summit County Land Bank’s new headquarters on South Portage Path. Focusing on these areas will help to direct resources and leverage public investment planned for these neighborhoods.

What?

The West Akron Neighborhood Plan will be a collective vision for neighborhood leaders, residents, the city, and other partners in successfully guiding priorities, initiatives, and investments in the community moving forward. This plan will take a comprehensive look at the neighborhood and develop strategic economic and community development recommendations for revitalization and improvement of the neighborhood to foster a high quality of life for neighborhood residents.

Under the guidance of the Progressive Alliance Community Development Corporation and the City of Akron, a project team will oversee the planning process with regular input from a Steering Committee. MKSK will coordinate the overall project team, provide project management and planning and design services, and prepare final deliverables that support a vision and plan for West Akron. Project Ujima, Inc. will lead the community engagement portion of the project, facilitating dialogue circles for the Steering Committee in addition to community stakeholders, residents, and business owners. KM Date Community Planning will provide market analysis scans relating to both retail, housing, and revitalization. The City of Akron will provide planning support and technical assistance throughout the process.

The process will be undertaken in four stages: 1) Project Initiation, 2) Understanding, 3) Developing & Testing Ideas, and 4) Deciding. Throughout the project, public engagement opportunities and interactive online tools will ensure equitable public engagement. The outcome of this work will be a user-friendly and graphically-rich document that will provide neighborhood leaders and residents with an updated vision for the community and an implementation strategy to pursue it.

The West Akron Neighborhood Plan will encompass the West Akron and Sherbondy Hill areas (see study area map on previous page). This plan will also focus heavily on the identified Great Streets of West Akron, and Sherbondy Hill and the area surrounding the Summit County Land Bank’s new headquarters on South Portage Path.

The planning effort will kick off in the fall of 2022. See the schedule graphic below for more information.
